Maybe you both served in the armed forces – or grew up with the same family dynamic. Sharing fond memories often uncovers similarities that you never knew you had. And one of the best things about engaging in these talks with an older adult, is that you almost always learn something new – and they almost always enjoy telling their story. Reach out to a senior in your life and let them know that their stories matter, and you want to hear them!

My grandma played the organ for 50 years. I went with her on Wed essays and Sundays. She always held my arm so she would not fall. She was a great lady. Miss her everyday. Sue PTe

I’ve taken in some extra items to a lady that cannot get out anymore. I remember my mother always helping others even though we needed help on occasion ourselves. She was always helping others. I’m thankful I’ve picked up the torch. She taught me well. I miss her everyday.

I have not been blessed with seniors in my life. My mother’s family is unknown to me and my father’s family lived quite a distance away. I was looking forward to helping my own father but unfortunately that opportunity was not made available to me. However, a few years ago I was taking care of my boyfriend’s mother when she asked me why I talk to my friend every day. At the time I was surprised considering it was something I had always done and asked her, “have you not had anyone that you share all your secrets with?” And she answered no absolutely not. I took her hand in mine and responded, “it’s a tremendous gift.”

My grand parent’s home was always a warm and supportive place to go, almost every weekend, special occasion or not. It didn’t matter what we did, wondering around on the farm, outdoor cooking, indoor cooking, birthday, anniversary, child christening, wedding, or just plain going there for a visit. And then, if it seemed right to do, walk to the aunts and uncles home’s that were close by. To get there, we all had to get into a big yellow school bus, one of my father’s part time jobs. We always had a large family, and it grew to 14 siblings.
Good, wholesome and fun times!

I do this with every senior I’ve worked with and we find out that we buy the same pants, that we have the same interests, and that gives us so much more to talk about and realize that we are a lot alike! It makes us care about each other that much more and share our stories with each other knowing that the other one understands and that we will give sound advice to each other about how we dealt with any difficulties in our lives to be successful in the outcomes! It’s an awesome thing to do if you’ve never tried it before! God bless all of you big hearted people who love our seniors! ❤️🙏😉

I was born in 1965. My grandmother who was born in the 1880’s lived with us growing up. I loved hearing stories about how she met my grandfather. She even told us that a certain street was called lovers Lane! And she giggled. I loved her giggles! She was 85, and I never knew the evergreens on that street were used in the 1910’s as secret dating spots. She showed me a picture of my grandfather and her in an early Indian motorcycle with the side rider, they were dressed to the teeth in early motorcycle wear.she also shared pictures of herself and her friends on the beach as a 17 year old around 1905. She was beautiful!! I wish I could adopt somebody her age just because the older we get the more interesting the memories.

My grandma was born in 1901. She came to America in 1947 just after ww11 with her three children. My Dad and his 2 sisters.
Grandma used to come over every Sunday for the day. (7 am until 3:30 p.m.) She would help my mom with laundry and they’d prepare Sunday dinner together ❤ (usually roast beef with yorkshire pudding)
At the end of her meal, she would always say “look at the airplane” pointing out the window, then quickly drink the gravy off her plate when we were all trying to see an airplane.
So many stories about that wonderful lady.

Saw an elderly lady at the base clinic. I asked if she needed help. There was a rug on the floor that she was trying to manage, that she was waiting for her daughter to come pick her up. I said there was a place to sit with Windows so she could see her daughter’s car and that it was a warm place for her to wait. I helped her inside. I felt so thankful that I could help someone. That’s my life. To be of help. Thanks for letting me share.

I never got to know my own grandparents but after my mother died, my father had a girlfriend who became the perfect grandmother to my girls. The shopped together, painted their nails together and went swimming in the pool at her building. She loved the sleepovers as much as they did! She is still alive but lives in a home in Canada and we call weekly and exchange cards. She’s a lovely lady!

My grandmother was a hair stylist in the 40’s through 1970. My favorite memories visiting her hair salon. All the older enlightening conversations I would hear that helped with life guidance. The best was the old school Coca Cola machine she had where the sodas were only 10 cents always. Women in an environment where they could speak openly amongst trusted friends.
