Reading has many benefits. For seniors, it’s been proven to enhance memory and slow down cognitive declines.
Here are five proven benefits of reading for seniors:
- Enhancing Memory
Reading engages the brain’s neural network and helps exercise memory. These activities are critical for short-term recall. - Sharpening Decision-Making Skills
Reasoning and problem-solving skills decline as we age. Reading can improve these skills for seniors. - Delaying Onset of Alzheimer’s and Dementia
Brain-challenging activities can delay onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Stories are one of the oldest brain-challenging activities in the history of mankind. - Reducing Stress
Much like meditation, getting lost in a good book can ease tension and reduce stress. - Sleeping Better
If your senior falls asleep during the book, don’t take it personally. Reading, as opposed to watching TV or looking at a screen, is considered a surefire way to induce heavy eyelids.
This week, we are challenging you to read with a senior. Choose a chapter from a book that you both love or an interesting article, and enjoy reading together!

I haven’t read with a senior yet, but to help with loneliness, you can schedule Zoom meetings with seniors from your church for example and have a bible study, play a Kahoot game, charades, etc. Check with YouTube for virtual game ideas.

Once a week, on my day off work, I read to a senior that lives down the road from me. She loves reading and due to the size of the print, she can no longer read a book. I get just as much or more penjoyment from reading to her as she gets from the experience.
