Help Us Connect More Pen Pals

Finished this kind act? Log it!

Socially isolated and lonely seniors need us more than ever. That’s why we’re leaning even harder on our pen pal program – encouraging the next wave of letter writing volunteers to make a difference with kind words. While we know we can’t reach every person in need today — with your help — we hope to continue making a difference in the lives of seniors.

Why become a pen pal?

A simple letter filled with kindness can instantly brighten someone’s day and give them a sense of purpose. Studies from the National Institute on Aging have even shown that seniors who connect with others through social activities have fewer health issues, such as depression, and have better cognitive function. And aside from their benefit, writing a thoughtful letter will undoubtedly make you, the writer, feel great!

Can we count on you to join our letter writing movement? Write your letter today

I had worked as a CNA at a Nursing Home for 23 years with the residents and I loved working with the residents because I treated them like they were family and they hated to see me be off for 2 days but they were glad to see me back. I loved my residents so much I hadn’t to give my job up for physical reasons.

I loved to hear some of the stories the seniors at the nursing home tells me. Some of them were good and some of them were sad and some of them would laugh your head off.

I sacrifice myself to work with seniors even during pandemic on a full-time bases due to lack of staffs to work ,its a great feeling to give a hands and cheer up seniors when they were alone in the room during isolation ,caring seniors like your own parents is like boosting and cheering yourselves also knowing that you can contribute to this world of chaos to make a difference and a hope and reason to live and enjoy life .

I have never written notice to the seniors and now I’m a senior myself I can understand how these letters bring happiness to them. What I did was cook for
2 seniors who both lived in my. apt bldg in
Brooklyn. Then I would bring my dinner and eat with them several times a week.
I would also go to church with them on some Sunday’s and just pop in on the weekends. I know they looked forward to my food as well as.my company and that was enough for me.

I worked in home health care for about 10 years, and then had my mom who suffered with Dementia live with us. After she passed away, my father in law lived with us with Alzheimers for 2 years. There is a special place in my heart for the elderly. I love hearing their stories about their lives and their life experiences.

I crochet little hearts and glue a magnet to them. I also add a kind not reminding them they are loved and never alone. I put this in a little bag with some sweet treats and give them to everyone I see. It always makes people happy and have a better day!

We are so blessed as a family. Our five children have a deep relationship with the Lord. Now they are grown and I’m taking care of my 89 year old mother. She was married for 48 years to a Navy man and now she needs much help. She would love to receive and write letters. Her name is Bette Ann.
