Be a Good Listener

How good of a listener are you? This week, engage in a conversation with a senior and try actively listening to their thoughts and concerns.

In today’s world, it’s not always easy to stay focused in a conversation. We’ve got 100 things on our minds to get done, a smartphone in our pocket buzzing with updates and a constant feeling of “hurry up” when it comes to daily tasks.

Relax, take a deep breath, and disconnect for a few minutes before you have your next conversation with a loved one. By clearing your thoughts, you’ll be able to actively listen to their words, give better non-verbal cues and participate in the conversation with questions and suggestions – showing them the respect and dignity that is incredibly important to their wellbeing.

Tell us how your more focused conversation went in the comments.

I have a 96 year old neighbor that lost his wallet. He was very concerned. The next day he called and thanked me for praying and that he had found it

I bought a charm for my necklace that says “ Love is patient, Love is Kind” made by James Avery Jewelry. When my patience is wearing thin from hearing the same story again & again, I rub my charm & repeat the words to myself, love is patient, love is kind.
I want to remember I listened.

My mom is in assisted living currently…I always start the video chat conversation with questions about her well being ,making sure to ask if she’s feeling ok or in any pain because sometimes she will not tell staff if she’s feeling unwell but will speak to me so it’s important I address the issue right away because we only get about 10-15 min to speak a couple times a week and her health is a priority

Look into their eyes when you are talking. Give them your full attention. Take the time to engage. Enjoy the time with them.
Read to them if they would enjoy that. Let them share stories with you from their past
Life is short so be sure to take the time.
Enjoy!

My mom is 84 and due to some health issues and a mild stroke she sometimes has trouble communicating like she used to so it’s important to focus on what she is saying and listen intensely without any other distractions.

I found that repeating back to them what you’ve heard them say is good for conversation especially if they were experiencing signs of memory loss as my 77 yr old mother is. To help her hold on to her memories, we discuss things from her childhood.

I talk to my 66 year old gentleman friend on the phone every day & we talk about our day & sing songs to each other. I do visit him occasionally at his independent living facility too

Good morning, My most and least conversation went well on both end. My client is a talker, I learnt that it is best to just listen and wait for a pulse from him and when the way is clear, then proceed to have a conversation on his topic to a minimal, let him feel that I am listening.
