It is estimated that 43% of seniors feel lonely on a regular basis, which can increase their risk of mortality. While limiting our visits can help keep our friends and family healthy, it’s also important to continue communicating with them to help them avoid social isolation. Video calls can be a great avenue for creating memorable moments even if we can’t meet in person.

Here are 7 experiences you can connect virtually:

  1. Read together
Grab a good book and take turns reading chapters to each other and see where your imaginations take you.
  2. Tell a childhood story
Surprise a loved one with a story they haven’t heard before.
  3. Teach a favorite recipe
Show a friend or loved one how to make a recipe through video chat.
  4. Have a dance-off
Show off some of your sweet dance moves and have a great laugh together.
  5. DIY together
Show a senior how to fix something or do a craft together.
  6. Watch a show or movie together
Find a great movie or show and click start at the same time.
  7. Make music
Grab a drum (or a pot and spoon) and jam together.

These are just a few ideas. Can you think of other virtual experiences you could have?

  5. I call my senior friends once a week to check in on them and I make playlists of music from their favorite genre or artists music for them and then I bring my JBL speaker with me when I visit them and play in the background some of their favorite music while I am there with them. If they love what I’ve played for them, I offer to burn a cd for them and leave it there with them to play in my absence. I even had one of my senior ladies get up and start dancing to their favorite songs and I danced with them!! It was so much fun and we laughed while we were dancing and still laugh about it to this very day… What great memories we make together! I love, love, love them all! ❤️🙏❤️

  12. My Senior friend has been diagnosed with Prostate cancer. He has been isolating and I am worried for him. I reached out yesterday and he finally opened up when I asked him how he was feeling mentally. I just reassured him I was just a phone call away if he needs anything.
