When we speak words of encouragement, it can make a world of difference in someone’s life. Seniors, more than any other group, suffer daily from isolation and loneliness. Many go days and some even weeks without hearing from another person.

No matter how busy we are, each of us can spare a few words of encouragement to a senior who really needs it.

Not sure what to say?

Try these simple prompts:

“I really admire you because ______”

“The way you handled ___ was really brave.”

“I really like the way you tell stories.”

“It’s always nice talking to you.”

“Your hair looks wonderful today!”

These are simple phrases, but they might just put a smile on a senior’s face that can last for days.

  6. Hi, I know what it is not to speak with a person for a day. I am 61 year’s old. I lost both parents and my daughter is in a foreign country but I could say a few words with a senior. It would be my pleasure. How do I get to them?

“I really need to exercise my legs today but I don’t go to the duck pond here, because I don’t like being alone.”

  16. Serving at the Vernon Multi-purpose Center Underground Railroad Museum in Kansas City, Kansas has been such an honor. Seeing the retired community connect with others through meals, hands on activities, cool TV shows, and through exercise is a blessing. Equally important, I love leading service learning projects at the Vernon Multi-purpose Center Underground Railroad Museum. The indoor mural service learning project is a troll to lead. It can’t wait to see how the mural will grow and evolve as diverse learners come to the museum to serve and learn about the history of Quindaro. May prayer is that all retired citizens will be treated with the upmost respect and care. Please know that you are honored and respected even though you are retired, the community and youth are behind you in service and love. May you latter days be better than your former. Sending you peace and hope from Kansas City, Kansas. Written graciously, America B. Patton

  17. I always go over to check on a lot of my senior friends and give them a call at least once or twice a month! We will chit chat about whatever is going on in each other’s lives and just catch up! I also will say how great they are sounding when I talk to them and that they seem to be doing well, which makes them smile through the phone… I know that just by remembering to call them to check on them let’s them know that they are always on my mind and that they are special to me! I love all of my senior friends so very much! ❤️🙏😘

  21. I have done several things for my elderly neighbors despite being immunocompromised. I wish there was a way we could directly contact seniors that are lonely. Both of my grandparents pretty much died by the time I was born and I find our elderly population in the US should be better respected and taken care of, I also see them as walking history books, I know that sounds weird.

I always make sure I make them laugh or pump then up that everything is going to be better but it has to start with the way they see things. Positively is contagious. Happiness is to. Laughter is the catchiest big around.
