I’m Ready to Log It!

Your mission this week is to learn something about senior isolation.

Did you know:

  1. No one is immune to loneliness. It can affect anyone of any age, even those surrounded by people.
  2. 1 in every 3 adults over 45 – almost 48 million people – consider themselves lonely.
  3. Those who experience loneliness and isolation are more likely to have health issues such as substance use and heart problems.
  4. People who report high levels of loneliness are less likely to live into older age.
  5. Loneliness is not always caused by a single event.
  6. Social health can be improved by talking to people or going out more frequently with friends and loved ones.

What did you learn? How does loneliness or isolation affect your life?

  4. Especially now encourage children and interested adults to write letters, draw pictures or send cards to those people who are locked down in nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and assisted living. These people are isolated from their friends and family and often times don’t even get an opportunity to talk with other residents. It’s too many hours of just sitting and staring at the same 4 walls.

  12. I am 73 & sole caregiver of 93 year old mother who can no longer live alone. She outlived 2 husbands & lived alone 30 years – very independent, very set in her ways, & feels guilty over needing help. With dementia & compression fractures in her back, she can no longer be left alone. Now even housekeeper cannot come. My husband, family, & friends are 850 miles away – it is a very hard season, BUT GOD . . . He is with us & gives us the peace & strength for the journey. I call friends who live alone or in hard seasons of their own & encourage them. I talk & pray daily with my husband of 54 years. We are committed to each other & in unity – he almost died from West Nile Virus & grounded from his monthly visits here until this virus season is over. In fact, grounded & family taking care of his needs for groceries, etc. We know we can do ALL things when we seek God’s wisdom & remember Christ is in the boat with us regardless of the outcome – that is where peace is found in the raging storms of life. Thank you to ALL of you reaching out to seniors.

They are lonely and even those with families they can’t visit them. I thank God I am able to take care one. It is hard to think about how important it is to think of the seniors around us.

  24. I am so blessed to have children who buy my groceries & take care of other issues that arise. As I was just getting out of rehab myself, I spent 4 days with my brother who on the other side took great care of me. We talked almost every day after that by phone; then he called saying It was hard for him to swallow, each day I prayed with him for his healing sharing the many benefits that also come with doing daily communion. He continued to improve as each day went by. I felt very blessed to be able to pray with friends about my same age, helping them to focus not on their loneliness but to lean on and trust God who will help bring them through this time as it prayfully won’t last much longer.

  28. Today I visited an elderly Christian friend who has no family To just drop by for 10-15 minutes.we talked for 45 minutes with me in the car and her at her fence.
Also called a elderly friend and asked if we could have coffee in her driveway. I’d bring my own coffee & chair. She invited another and the 3 of us had a great visit socially distanced and out in the fresh Spring air.

  29. I have called a few people I know, however when I see someone outside as I walk somewhere I will wave or say Hi from a long distance away. I have taken to heart the advice I saw of waving and smiling to others when God happens to give opportunity. All of us are together in this war against this virus and encouraging others helps them and us.

  39. Im trying to help my 10 year old who’s having a hard time with quarantine. We’re looking for community projects that would help bring smiles to seniors in the area. It’s hard being isolated but it must be even harder for those in nursing homes. Maybe we will send cards to a local nursing home it would cheer both of them up!
