“Brown paper packages tied up with string, these are a few of my favorite things.” – Julie Andrews

Along with raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, packages can add cheer to a lonely day. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 28% of people aged 65 and older live alone. Another survey finds that 1 out of 3 seniors are lonely. If you’re far away from your family or if you want to stay in touch between visits, giving a care package is a great way to let someone know you’re thinking of them.

This week, collect items you may already have to make a simple care package for a senior neighbor or loved one. (Bonus points if you can hand-deliver it!) Here are some items you could include:

  • One of your favorite books with a note sharing why it’s your favorite
  • A magazine or crossword puzzle
  • A moisturizing lotion
  • Herbal tea or a diet-friendly snack
  • Stationery and an invitation to be pen pals
  • Something personal like a recipe, drawing or framed picture
  • A warm lap blanket or a pair of cozy socks

What will you include in your care package?

  2. My 80 year old mother doesn’t seem to want or need little things. Her space is tight and easily cluttered, BUT, what seems to mean more to her than anything is long lingering hugs, or sitting close, or resting my hand on her arm. Seniors dont often get physical touch daily.

  7. I went to the dollar store and made a basket. I gave it to this little widow woman and her eyes just lit up. Spent a little time visiting. I think it made her day.

  9. Made a little care package for a senior church friend who was in rehab after being in the hospital. As well as a loose fitting jogging outfit, I included nail polish, remover, cotton balls, chap stick, and of course some Dove chocolates! Just trying to help her few a little more at home in a strange place.

  10. I made a basket of fresh fruit from the local farmers market, wrote a nice card saying how much I think about her, and in the card I invited her to go play bingo next week with me and go out for dinner together after we got done playing bingo. Then I included a gift card to go to see any movie 🍿 she chooses and I would pick her up and take her to the show. And after the show I told her we could go grab a bite to eat at the new diner that just opened up downtown that is all the rave right now! She lit up like a Christmas Tree and said β€œThat gives me so many things to look forward to Julie!” And I said back to her β€œI know, me too!” And I also included a gift card to go buy whatever she wanted to read at the local book store, and I asked her if she wanted to go now and get her books with me? She happily agreed and we had a wonderful time spending the rest of the day together, chit chatting and just spending time together! Thanks for the ideas πŸ’‘ on how to do this! It was a genuine hit for all involved! πŸ˜‰πŸ’•πŸ’πŸŽπŸΏπŸ™β€οΈ
